Rolex Sea-Dweller Ref. 1665 — Vintage 1978, Patinated Dial (Pre-Owned)

LTFL Background and Ownership History

Luxury Time For Less® was very fortunate to have acquired this classic vintage Rolex Sea-Dweller directly from the technicians who professionally serviced and refurbished the watch. The Sea-Dweller had been well-worn by previous owners, but it has been rejuvenated “from top to bottom” for years of future use and enjoyment by the next owner. This watch sports a beautifully patinated dial, which adds to its stunning character. The Sea-Dweller is sold with LTFL’s full one-year warranty, which covers defects in the case, movement and bracelet, so the next owner can buy with confidence.

Service History and Condition Notes

This Sea-Dweller has been comprehensively serviced and refurbished by professional watch technicians prior to LTFL acquiring it. The movement is operating correctly and the watch has been brought back to reliable working condition for the next owner.

During the recent restoration, the hour and minute hands were re-lumed by the technicians, and the original deployant clasp — which had sustained damage — was replaced with a period-correct Rolex 93150 part. The bracelet links themselves are original to the watch.

The dial was not replaced as part of this work and presents as original to the case, displaying a beautifully patinated character developed over its lifetime. As is conventional with vintage Rolex pieces of this age, Luxury Time For Less® defers final determination of dial provenance to the discretion of the next owner.

Backed by Luxury Time For Less®’s full one-year warranty against defects in the case, movement and bracelet.

Heritage and Brand Origins

Rolex was founded in London in 1905 by Hans Wilsdorf, who moved the company to Geneva, Switzerland a decade later. From the very beginning, Wilsdorf was obsessed with two things: precision and waterproofing. In 1926 Rolex introduced the Oyster, the world’s first commercially successful waterproof wristwatch case. Three decades later, the company turned its attention to the deep sea — first with the Submariner in 1953, and then with the Sea-Dweller in 1967.
The Sea-Dweller was developed in partnership with the French commercial diving company COMEX, specifically for saturation divers working at depth for days at a time. It was the first wristwatch fitted with a helium escape valve — a tiny gas-release mechanism that prevents the crystal from popping during decompression. Reference 1665, produced from 1967 to roughly 1983, is the original Sea-Dweller: rated to 2,000 feet / 610 meters, sized at 40 millimeters in stainless steel, and powered by Rolex’s automatic Caliber 1575. It is the direct ancestor of every Sea-Dweller produced since.
