Few watches are as instantly recognizable as the Rolex Datejust. Introduced in 1945, it was the first self-winding wristwatch to display the date in a window on the dial — a genuine innovation that set the template for the modern dress watch. The reference 1601, produced from around 1960 into the early 1980s, is the vintage Datejust that defined the line’s enduring look: a 36mm Oyster case, a fluted gold bezel, an acrylic crystal with the signature Cyclops date lens, and a choice of Jubilee or Oyster bracelet. Powered by Rolex’s robust, chronometer-rated automatic movements, the 1601 remains one of the most respected and sought-after entry points into vintage Rolex collecting.

As Luxury Time For Less® expands its focus on and attention to the vintage watch field, we acquired this 100% authentic 1601 — a watch that is definitely “more right than wrong.” While this example is not issue-free (the model and serial numbers are partially illegible due to natural case pitting between the lugs, and the bracelet shows significant stretch), it is a genuine and characterful representative of this highly sought-after vintage Datejust, with its unique patinated “pie-pan” dial and applied gold “spear” indices. The watch recently underwent a full movement service, so the buyer can expect years of trouble-free ownership. This 1601 is sold with LTFL’s full one-year warranty covering the movement, case, bracelet, and clasp.

The Watch

This is the two-tone 1601 in stainless steel with an 18kt yellow gold fluted bezel and matching gold crown, on a two-tone (steel and 18kt gold) Jubilee bracelet. The standout feature is the dial: a silver “pie-pan” that has aged to a warm, even patina, fitted with 18kt yellow gold “spear” hour markers and gold hands, the date at 3 o’clock magnified by the Cyclops lens in the acrylic crystal. It runs an automatic movement with a sweep seconds hand and is protected by a solid, screw-down stainless steel Oyster caseback. A true vintage Rolex with honest character — light on the wrist, warm in the hand, and unmistakably a Datejust.
