Condition and Details

The 23 mm × 28 mm 18kt yellow gold case is framed by a diamond-set bezel and fitted with an 18kt yellow gold crown set with a blue cabochon. The blue sunburst dial carries 18kt yellow gold dauphine hands, four diamond hour markers at 12, 3, 6 and 9 o’clock and the GUBELIN signature, all beneath a sapphire crystal. The solid 18kt yellow gold caseback is signed Patek Philippe Genève and stamped 18K 750. Because the caseback simply snaps on, the watch is not water resistant, so it is best kept dry.

Inside is Patek Philippe’s manual-wind Caliber 16-250, Swiss made, with a power reserve of at least 38 hours. The watch is worn on a black crocodile strap in serviceable condition, secured by an 18kt yellow gold Patek Philippe tang buckle, and is currently sized for a 6 1/4-inch wrist. No original box or papers.

Heritage and Brand Origins

Patek Philippe’s origins date back to 1839, and the company is regarded as one of the world’s finest watch brands — if not the finest. In 1968 Patek Philippe introduced the Golden Ellipse, known for its oval case positioned between a circle and a rectangle and drawn from the proportions of the golden ratio. To this day Patek Philippe continues to produce the Golden Ellipse, and its recognizable traits have remained unchanged over the decades.

Reference 4382 is the ladies’ Golden Ellipse, made in 18kt yellow or white gold from the mid-1970s to the early 1990s. This example brings together some of the most desirable details of the family: a diamond bezel, diamond hour markers, a blue sunburst dial and Patek Philippe’s manual-wind Caliber 16-250.
